Ultrasound Scans
What is an ultrasound scan?
An ultrasound scan is a test performed using a special machine with a probe about the size of a credit card. The probe emits very high-frequency sound waves that cannot be heard. These waves bounce off tissues beneath the skin to create echoes which are detected by the same probe. Some clever technology then builds the echoes into black-and-white pictures, depending on how ‘loud’ the echo is. It looks a little bit like static on a television to the untrained eye, but actually gives excellent detail.
The technology is particularly effective for examining soft tissues around the shoulder, such as detecting rotator cuff tears. Key advantages include:
- An ultrasound is a dynamic test. What that means is you can see things moving in real-time. That makes it very useful if you have problems in certain positions.
- Guided injections: ultrasounds can help to place injections to hard-to-reach areas with precision by allowing doctors to watch the needle placement and injection process.
Ultrasounds are not suitable for examining bones.
Mr. Davies can perform ultrasound scans, including using a scanner to perform guided injections during your appointment.
How is an ultrasound performed?
You will be asked to remove clothing from the area being scanned. Some cool gel is applied to your skin to help the sound waves get through, then the probe is moved across the area and captures images. You are often asked to move your arm into different positions during the scan. The procedure is typically painless, though the gel may feel cold initially. The gel is safe, non-toxic, and washes out easily from clothing.
Are ultrasounds safe?
Yes. Ultrasounds use no harmful radiation and cannot damage tissue.
How soon will I get the result?
You may receive immediate verbal feedback, with a formal written report typically delivered within one day. At Mr. Davies's one-stop clinic, results are available immediately.
