Mr. Ronnie Davies
MMedSci MB/BChir FRCS (Tr & Orth)
What you can expect from me
Hello! I’m Ronnie Davies, a consultant shoulder & elbow surgeon.
I’d like to start by telling you what to expect if you come to see me. If you are interested in my qualifications and training, have a look further down the page.
- I will listen to you about the problems you are experiencing with your shoulder or elbow.
- I will carefully examine you to help to work out what the cause of the problem is.
- If necessary, I will organise X-rays or scans to help to diagnose the problem.
- I will provide you with an expert opinion in clear English so that you understand what is going on.
- I will clearly explain your treatment options and help you to choose your preferred treatment.
- I will be available for you to stay in touch after you have visited.
Although I am a surgeon, I know that many shoulder problems can be treated without surgery, using specialised injections and targeted physiotherapy. I will guide you through your treatment and we will work together to get you back to your normal activities as quickly as possible.
I maintain an open mind when it comes to diagnosing your problem and think beyond your shoulder or elbow as the source of the pain.
Above all, I love my job and get a great deal of satisfaction meeting and treating people. You can be guaranteed that I will treat you with respect, honesty and with a kind and friendly manner.
There is more information about exactly how I work with you in the Patient Information area of the website.
What My Patients Say
Personal Information
I was born and raised in Manchester (actually, Bury) and went to school locally. After university, I lived in Cambridge for a couple of years, before returning close to my roots in North Manchester. Aside from my medical practice, I also have small IT business.
I am married to a clinical psychologist and have two little boys who certainly keep my on my toes at home! In my free time, I like to play racket sports, enjoy cooking and spending time with family.
Qualifications and Training
- I gained my medical degree at the University of Cambridge in 2005, graduating with Distinction.
- Along the way, I picked up a First Class BA (hons) in Natural Sciences, doing some research into how the brain makes you move.
- I completed my orthopaedic training in the North West of England, during which I completed examinations to be appointed Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS Tr & Orth).
- After training, I had specialist fellowship training in shoulder & elbow surgery at the renowned Robert Jones Orthopaedic Hospital in Oswestry.
- I have also completed a Masters in Medical Education with the University of Nottingham.
NHS Practice
I am currently a consultant trauma & orthopaedic surgeon at Manchester Foundation Trust. This is now one of the largest hospital groups in the UK. My work is split between Wythenshawe Hospital, a large, busy hospital in South Manchester, and Trafford General Hospital. Here, I am responsible for treating patients who have suffered injuries. This is a varied practice, including the treatment of general injuries to the arms and legs. I also specialise in the treatment of complex injuries to the arm and shoulder, including shoulder and elbow fractures and dislocations.
My elective (non-emergency) practice is centred at Trafford General Hospital. This hospital boasts the specialised Manchester Orthopaedic Centre, a central hub for treating patients with bone and joint problems. There are dedicated facilities for one-stop clinics, meaning that patients can have their X-rays, scans, physiotherapy and other treatments in a single visit. This saves you valuable time waiting for additional appointments and hopefully gets you back to normal as quickly as possible.
Other Roles and Interests in Medicine
I get a great deal of pleasure out of teaching and training new generations of junior doctors. Armed with a Masters in Medical Education, I am the Education Lead for all orthopaedic surgery trainees in the North West. I also teach regularly on national courses, including the popular AO Principles course, to train junior orthopaedic trainees how to safely fix broken bones.
Another great interest is using technology to improve surgery. For example, all of my patients having a shoulder replacement have computer-guided shoulder replacements. This technology allows me to place the implants much more accurately than can be done by eye alone. This is expected to make them work better and last longer than they otherwise would. I am also interested in 3D printing for surgery. This helps me to plan my surgery more accurately. I currently have a 3D printer sitting on my dining room table at home, much to the annoyance of Mrs. Davies!
Research and Academic Interests
I have published extensively in medical journals about my research involving orthopaedic surgery and medical education. I am leading a large trial at present to determine whether wearing a sling is beneficial or harmful to patients’ recovery after shoulder surgery. For more information about this trial, click here.
