Insured Patients
Before seeing Mr. Davies, it is important to obtain a referral letter from your GP. Some insurance companies also accept referrals from a physiotherapist. After receiving the referral letter, you should contact your insurer to obtain pre-authorisation and confirm what costs they will cover. They will tell you which investigations or treatments you may have as part of your appointment. If you are offered treatments or tests that are not pre-authorised, you will need to contact your insurance company again for further authorisation.
Please note that some insurance companies charge an excess on any claims and making a claim may forfeit a no-claims bonus applied to your policy.
Self-funding
If you do not have insurance, you can arrange an appointment to see Mr. Davies. You do not need a referral letter if you are self-funding. Many operations and treatments are offered through the hospital as a ‘package’, so please get in touch if you would like a quotation.
Mr. Davies also offers one-stop packages for rapid diagnosis and treatment of shoulder and elbow conditions at Highfield Hospital.
Fees
- £150 for a new consultation.
- £100 for a follow-up consultation.
- If you need an X-ray, the hospital charges approximately £130.
- The hospital charges £150 if you have an injection.
- Private MRI scans are usually charged at around £300.

What happens during the appointment?
The first appointment usually takes around 30 minutes. Mr. Davies will talk to you about the problem that you are experiencing with your shoulder or elbow. He will also ask questions about your general health, other medical conditions, any medications you take, and any allergies that you have. It is helpful to bring a list of your medications with you to the appointment.
After taking this detailed information, Mr. Davies will carefully examine you to help work out what is causing the problem. He may request further tests, such as an X-ray which is usually performed on the day, Somtimes, he may refer you for an ultrasound scan which usually happens within a week or two.
Treatments may be offered including:
- Injections: These can usually be performed at your initial appointment.
- Physiotherapy: Mr. Davies may offer a referral to his specialist physiotherapist, or you can choose your own. You may need to obtain separate authorisation from your insurance company for this.
- Surgery: If you are offered surgery, you will have to provide your insurance company with the procedure code to ensure that they will cover the cost of surgery. If self-paying, Mr. Davies will provide the ‘package price’, which includes all fees that are charged by the anaesthetist and hospital.

Monitoring after clinic
If you agree to it, you will be signed up to an electronic system. This system will periodically send e-mails and text messages with questionnaires to find out how you are getting on.
Your doctor can keep an eye on this to monitor you without you needing to return to clinic regularly.

Video Consultations
If you have a webcam, smartphone or tablet, you may be offered a video appointment to save you from having to come back to clinic physically.
Regardless of which clinic you attend, you are given some options to keep in touch using modern technology and save you from needing to come back to the hospital for a check-up. If you agree to it, Mr. Davies will arrange for questionnaires to be e-mailed to you periodically to check on your progress. This system is often referred to as Patient-Recorded Outcome Measures, or PROMS. You may also be offered video consultations which for many people is more convenient than physically coming to the hospital for a future appointment. Most insurance companies will cover the cost of this type of follow-up. Of course, if you prefer to be seen in-person, a face-to-face clinic can be arranged.
